Size Me Up, Scotty! The Most Up-To-Date Social Media Image Sizes

The Most Up-To-Date Social Media Image Sizes

A picture is worth a thousand words, so you don’t want it to be cut off or formatted incorrectly! Here’s your guide to accurate social media image sizes.

You’ve put time and effort into creating the perfect social media cover image. You upload your masterpiece and … crap! The image is blurry or part of it is cut off.

This is extremely frustrating, but it doesn’t have to keep happening to you. Learning the proper dimensions for each of the different social covers will save you from feeling like you want to throw your laptop out the window and make you look like a pro.

Let’s get started!

Why Do Social Covers Matter?

Consistency is key in branding, so adding similar cover images across all of your social media platforms will help reinforce your brand’s image and give your business a more professional look. Since the cover photo is the first thing people will see when they visit your social media sites, it’s critical in establishing a positive first impression.

While choosing a great stock image might seem like an easy answer, it’s really not the best solution. Your cover photo should include your brand colours and the design should focus on telling your brand’s story at a glance.

To successfully make your brand stand out on social media, you’ll have to put some extra effort into your cover image design. There’s nothing worse than creating a perfect design and having it distorted by sizing issues, so it pays to just get it right the first time.

Here are the updated dimensions for some of the most popular social media sites.

Facebook Image Sizes

With over 2.32 billion monthly active users, Facebook still remains the world’s most popular social media platform. This means that your cover image has the power to get in front of a TON of people. To make sure it looks great, stick with the standard size recommendation of 800 x 312 px.

Profile pictures, both for personal and business pages, should be 180 x 180 px. Here are some of the other Facebook image sizes you should know:

  • Shared image: 1200 x 630 px
  • Shared link: 1200 x 628
  • Highlighted image: 1200 x 717

Twitter Image Sizes

Twitter headers photos should be 1500 x 500 px. Upload your profile photo as 400 x 400 px., and Twitter will resize it to 200 x 200 px.

In-stream photos should be at largest 1024 x 512 px. and at the smallest, 440 x 220 px.

Instagram Image Sizes

Instagram doesn’t currently use cover photos, but you’ll still need to appropriately size your profile photo and the images you upload.

Your profile photo should be 110 x 110 px. and should maintain a 1:1 ratio. Images should be 1080 x 1080 px. while story images are slightly larger at 1080 x 1920 px.

YouTube Image Sizes

Standard image size for your YouTube Channel Cover Photo should be 2560 x 1440 px. Images should be 800 x 800 px., and they’ll display as 98 x 98 px. This platform supports images in JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG formats.

To display in full HD, your video dimensions should be at least 1280 x 720. They must also maintain a 16:9 aspect ratio.

The One Size Fits All Approach

A great strategy with graphics and images is to use a one size fits all approach so the text stays in the middle of the image and is not cropped.

one size to rule them allTIPS:

Text (if used) should only go into the middle of the graphics and be less than 20% of the total area. If you want to boost this image, it won’t be approved by Facebook if it has to much text.

An image with these dimensions is ideal for retina display, can be used on the website pages and as a blog featured image, will post to social media and look great on most devices.

Try 1600×800 with 160px padding on either side or use Square 800×800.
